BOLD LIGHTING

Bold Lighting offers high-quality products with moderate pricing (above $$ range) in 3 categories: downlight, linear, and track system. Their competitors are USAi, LUCIFER, Coronet, etc.

Today we looked at some of their updated and new products and here are the highlights:

Downlight Family, Chameleon:

  • Available in 3” and 4” (outer ring), offered in trimless plaster and wood installation.

  • The same IP20 fixture can be wet-rated by adding a gasket above the light and then sealing the lens.

  • Wallwasher: Specular reflector providing 1 : 1.4 spacing ratio (from wall : between fixtures) with a very clean line of light at the top! A great option for locations with restricted set back or where a minimal fixture qty is preferred. Although, because of the wide spread - do be careful at the ends of walls and at doorways.

  • Adjustable: We unfortunately did not like the Zoom option, but other optics were very clean color over angle.

>> They have a super shallow housing! <<

  • Only 2" deep & IC rated for wallwash and fix downlight.

  • For mounting, torsion spring mount is the standard option which works with ceilings up to 3/4” deep. In addition, they have a force spring mounting system, which accommodates up to 4” ceiling thickness.

  • For pricing, the standard option is around $200, and the highest with all the features, wet-rated, RGBW, Lutron dimming would be approx. $260.

Linear Light Family:

  • Available for Interior & Exterior with symmetric baffle, asymmetric wall wash, asymmetric wall grazer, and various optical distributions.

  • In general, both grazer and wallwasher fixtures have a kick reflector and provide nearly glare-free illumination (we looked at them in very close proximity, and both were very comfortable to look at).

  • The wallwash fixture has an asymmetric 25 degree beam spread, providing a uniform vertical wash

    • This fixture utilizes a special kick reflector that allows 1 : 2.7 ratio of from the wall / between the fixtures, and the set back from the wall of 1/8 to 1/6 pf the ceiling height.

  • Fixtures are designed to appear the same, regardless of the interior or exterior rating, to service the fluid space architectural design currently in style.

  • The symmetric distribution comes without the kicker component with optical options of 10 to 60 degrees, linear spread, and batwing.

  • Up to 2500lm/ft, in a continuous run.

  • Recessed up-light: Drive over, IP67 listed, but tested for IP68! Can handle flooding. Doesn't need additional housing (requires min 1” gap around for pouring material), a connector to be directly connected to the conduit. Anti-slip coating is available as an option.

Track System Family:

  • Low voltage 24V magnetic track system. Also available in a curve shape, accepting all the lighting components except the wallwasher.

  • The track head comes in three sizes: Snoot 2, Snoot1, and Snoot 0 (the smallest). We can have two Snoot 0 on one driver. *We looked at the Snoot 1 (medium).

  • Drop Wallwasher head, provided a nice wash with a clean cut-off on the ceiling.

  • We also looked at Break with Opal fixtures that sticks out of track and bend (for wall illumination like WW). It’s also available in the baffle option.

In general, their fixtures are offered in color tuning, static white, & RGBW. Unlimited dimming options, including 0-10 (to 0% & 1%), ELV, Lutron, DMX, and Bluetooth controls (Casambi, Dali).

All we looked at up to this point was great, BUT the two following fixtures were next level and captivating!

HONEYCOMB TIR: Well executed honeycomb integration with unique finishes: speculated chrome, bright gold, and champagne!

  • Available with black interior and TIR optic LEDs aligned in the center of the fixture, OR with an opal lens across the full back of the louver for diffused light with a very low glare rating. The Honeycomb Opal is listed with a UGR<19

ECLIPSE - Single and Multi (3 & 5 cells). I shall call you little beast!

  • Indirect light source up to 500lm for each cell (5 cell is 2500lm), reminiscent of the AR111 lamp.

  • Available as surface, pendant, and recessed (trimmed and trimless) body styles.

  • The reflector is movable - by hand - with 45 degree adjustability. The movement of the reflector adjust the angle of the beam of light very efficiently.
