Design Plan: Luce & Light

Today, DesignPlan brought in Luce & Light (L&L) so we could check out their new outdoor fixtures, made in their Vicenza, Italy factory. Everything was well designed and of excellent quality.

New & Updated fixtures:

  • Tago: linear in-grade, tilt +/-20deg without opening the fixture, antiglare louvers, individual honeycomb louvers on the diode.
*The River is being discontinued, to be replaced by Tago

  • Colorado: the largest in the linear family. Adjustable frame/frameless.
It will be on the website 12/1! We were impressed with how quiet the fixture is considering the very high output.

  • Quilatero: The new Square in-grade comes in four (4) different sizes with wattages from 8W-24W. It is available in fixed or adjustable (from outside) with IP69K (suitable for power wash). Comes with 2 styles of trim: without visible screws for a discreet look suitable for high-end residential or with regressed screws for more secure installation.

    • The wallwasher option has a spacing ratio of 1:2 from wall to O.C

  • Alto Piano: We were the first to see the sample in North America, Woohoo!
Round & Square recessed downlights that are IP66, available four (4) sizes. Housing is a polymer with magnetic trim - Trim and glass are flush (we liked this sleek look!). Hexcell louver accessory is available.

None of these are stocked. All are made to order with various options with a 6-week lead time. Housings can ship more quickly.

Typ, 2200k CCT is now an option. In addition to standard CCTs, fixtures may have the option for tunable white or dim-to-warm 1800K to 3000K.

LLI - strip light

WALD received a kit of LLI linear tape light and extrusions. The kit contained the base line of tape (LLIL) with various extrusions, CCT, and output. The offerings of CCT, output, extrusions, dimming protocol, and tunable white/static color are similar to qtran and luminii. Cut sheets are easy to navigate. First select an extrusion, then refer to chart below with compatible tape lights and lensing option, and their imaging quality (uniform, semi-uniform, imaging). Dimension diagram only shows bare fixture without any bracket. Dimension of bracket is on following page.

  • Hand bendable aluminum extrusion in up/down direction – FLEX extrusion

  • (3) different lines of static white tape. LLI base (L), High efficacy (HE), and tight pitch (TP)

  • Color changing with static white CCT

  • Tunable white with ranges of CCT

  • DN price range for static white with extrusion is $29/FT + $80/0-10v driver

  • DN price range for color changing with extrusion $34/FT + $90 DMX decoder + $125 DMX controller + $60/nondim driver

In the below photos, tiles are used to show imaging on reflected surfaces.
Images 1 to 4 are of:
THIN with tight pitch 2.5W tape frosted lens showing a semi-uniform diode imaging true to the cutsheet.

Images 5 to 8 are of:
DEEP with standard 4.4W tape frosted lens showing a uniform diode imaging when at 100% true to the cutsheet and semi-uniform when dimmed.

COLORBEAM LIGHTING

Today, we looked at COLORBEAM Lighting unique control program and new RGBW+Tunable white fixture:

  • Low voltage fully controllable light fixtures

  • All the fixtures are available in a range of 1800 CCT to 4000 CCT

  • NOW RGBW + fully tunable White

  • The concept is being able to control scenes easily using a DMX controller

  • The gateway allows their system to communicate with other none DMX systems have to assign the addressable drivers

  • Gateway is universal, with 120 channels

  • They have pre-programmed drivers for other systems like Lutron

  • No Data cable, just DC power cable and 1 channel for everything  - Example: 2 channels for warm dim : 1 for cool White, 1 for the warm white

  • For RGBW, there would be 4 channels

  • Smooth dimming to 1%

  • They created their own IP addressed - web app requires for programming

Lutron System

  • Homeworks QS with keypads in different spaces.

  • Their processor seats on their system and incorporated without a hiccup, as if we are controlling and setting Lutron

  • They use integrated scene-setting for control. The lighting designer just has to configure the scenes, set the tunes and color, and luck them.

Crestron needs an additional component to translate.

  •  Homeowners would not be able to change the setting without calling the integrator. Log in to the color beam configurator app and set the settings and levels.

Distance from the fixtures to drivers: With TYP. Cat6 distance is around 200ft to 300ft.

Their advantage is category cable instead of AC wire which reduce the cost, and they are among the few that offer full tunable and color changing

BIANCA 16W: Availale in 1800K-4000K / 2700K-6500K ranges - 1400 lm, 1550 lm, & 1600 lm - 20° and 40° -

We looked at 4000K to 1800k at it felt too orangish!

  • Price-wise, around 70% cheaper than Ketra.

  • They sell through AV and Distributer.

  • Trimless only available for plaster mounting

  • They have gibels

  • No wall-washer

LUMINII

LIGHTFAIR 2021

A brief look at LightFair 2021, held at the Javits Center in NYC. Overall, there weren’t many participants and we’d already seen many of them in virtual presentations over the year.

The one worth highlighting was the ORIGAMX. It is a specification-grade architectural lighting system that was developed by BLACK TANK.
ORIGAMX office is located in Atlanta - Mainly custom made - based on request. Their mono-point features are Hybrid Driver Technology (PWM/Current Control), RGBA LED (2000K-10,000K), and White Light or Color Mixing in one Light.

We also enjoyed seeing the PURE EDGE LIGHTING Saber Suspension in person.

N8 LIGHTING

Today we looked at the new updates to the N8 LIGHTING downlights, including the 800 Series NEW tunable white option.

The adders for warm-dim and tunable are just $20 and $80. We also reviewed the smooth dimming curve in warm dim and standard white with N8’s DIM1 standard driver.

The mono-point now comes with four (4) stem lengths and round or square shapes, installed with a 4” Jbox with an integrated driver. A new remote driver option comes with a 1” canopy. (NOT AVAILABLE AS TRIMLESS BUT it’s very thin, just 1/8”. ) Available narrow spots are: A true 10 degree beam (not in WD), 15 degree (available with WD), NOT AVAILABLE in 2700k BUT this CCT can be achieved with colored lens accessories.

All the downlights have Cree LED chip except the mono-points.

Cooledge

Today we had Cooledge visit the office. They brought samples of both their tile systems and a fabricated tunable white sample.

Tile System

Cooledge-1x1-Tile.jpg

There are 1' x 1' and 2' x 2' tiles. The tiles are constant voltage and cuttable in the field. The lines on the tiles are where they tiles can be cut. The circular marks are where the tiles can be screwed or stapled.

The tiles come in the CCT ranging from 22K-57K and are available in low, medium, and high output.

The tiles also come in dim-to warm and tunable white. The dim-to-warm goes from 35K-22K. The tunable ranges from 27K-57K.

Flush mount

Cooledge-Flushmount-2.jpg

A Flush Mount option is available and is better when a project requires larger use of the product.

Unlike similar products, with the flush mount, maintenance is easier because the fabric can be untucked to reveal the tiles and pushed back in with a spatula tool.

Fabricated Fixtures

Coolege-Fabricated.jpg

Cooledge also has factory ready fabricated fixtures. They come in suspended, recessed, and surface mount options. They have standard sizes but can also accommodate some custom sizes. They have a 4" minimum standard depth. The fabricated fixtures only come in the medium and high output.

There is only 1 fabric option but it is possible to print designs on the fabric. Acoustic options are also available.

The lead time is quicker with the fabricated products but if maintenance needs to be done, a Cooledge installer will have to do it.

*All of these products work with Cooledge dimming.

CORONET POP-UP SHOWROOM

Today, we visited the Coronet's Pop-up showroom in Chelsea.

Dimension

  • The fixture can be expanded or inverted by 2” to 4" on the center within the same fixture run. (fixtures joints by molding)
  • Available in 8' and 12' lengths.
  • This fixture can also be bi-directional.

LS3 Extrusion

  • Tunable white 2700K to 5000K with intensity control. (New!)
  • They have a vertical light blocker and are working on a magnetic system to pull fixtures together.
  • They are considering improving the lens (male, female sliding to each other), overlapping, taping on the back (been proposed) since currently gaps can be seen between adjacent lenses.

Fuego

  • This fixture cannot be physically modified.
  • The CCT and stem length can be modified however.
  • It is standard 0-10v.

PIER LED UPDN

  • Available in Bi-directional, recessed, and surface mounting.
  • It has an integral driver
  • The LS3 is bi-directional, LS1 is single direction (direct).
  • A highlight of this fixture is that it is heavily modifiable, not so costly.

Wave

  • This fixture looks very similar to the Vibia fixture. However, this fixture does not pivot.
  • It is made of aluminum and has a drop acrylic lens.
  • It has an integral driver
  • Can be single or bi-directional.
  • The center spine could be longer but the fixture lens cannot.

Loopita

  • The vacuum formed plastic lens makes the ring seamless.
  • Available in matte, gloss, semi-gloss, and flat finishes.
  • The tape is right on top of the fixture.
  • It has a central axis canopy (flat canopy available as well).
  • It does have some uplight.
  • Up to 5’ diameter.

Magnetic Track System

  • A 3 circuit, 24V, magnetic rail, robust system with 0-10 dimming.
    • The largest load is 96 watt/circuit. They are looking to increase the sizing and higher temp standard for CA requirements.
  • The recessed track head is new! It started 10/2018.
  • 17° to 33° optics on this 450 LED track head
  • There is an increment restriction of 11” on baffle and 6” on the linear system.
  • Downward and upward lens.

50° optic shown above.

This is the brighter version of the part of the Loopita series.

  • Available in 18", 3’, 4’, and 5’ sizes.
  • Soft curved, seamless form, RGB color.
  • Cost effective.
  • Top lit, 20% uplight contribution.
  • Acoustic panel on top as an addition is coming soon!

The Wall grazer, part of the PG4 Series.

We liked the grazing!

  • What we also noticed was the optic is a little greenish. Perhaps because of the silicon lens!
  • As it can be seen in this photo, the light is located 4”-5” away from the wall which causes a nice 15° light distribution on the floor.

Square Series

  • The illuminated dropped lens can be popped up too for indirect lighting

CURVED LS SERIES:

  • 30° and 45° radius curve.
  • It comes as direct/indirect as well.

  • NOTE: They are using Osram, Samsung LED chips for round fixtures
  • Cree LED chips are used in linear systems and the track heads.
  • Their facility allows for the max cutting length of 12’ run.
  • For 2019, they are considering more sconces and wet location linear lights.

Optic Arts

Optic Arts stopped by the office today show show us some new products. FLEX ACv2- Line Voltage Strip

The FLEX ACv2 was the first fixture we looked at. This fixture is unique because it has silicone encapsulation. Silicone has never been rated for fixtures, so Optic Arts is the first. Silicone retains integrity over time. It is also more environmentally friendly. Another positive aspect of silicone is that it works with saltwater (keep in mind that the hardware still does not). However, the silicone is not field cuttable because it is a line voltage fixture.

Some other things to keep in mind with this fixture:

  • This will be an IP67 system as of this October.
  • Optic Arts will correct any unintended color shifting.
  • The LEDs will be symmetrically spaced unlike the photos show.
  • The fixture has full range dimming. If there is a discernible flicker, it is less than 30%.

The image shows the 3,000K fixture. 3,000K is delivered with the shift accounted for.

We were also shown a knife edge cove fixture. The low voltage strip was in the example shown.

We also looked at the Vintage Dim fixture and the Nitelite Closet Rod (below) so we could look at them while specifying for a project.

The Nitelite Closet Rod is not completely node free- it does have a distinct line, but you do not see individual nodes with this fixture. The strip inside is cuttable every 2 inches. This fixture can be field cut. A cover for the screw holes can be available upon request. There is plastic on top of the fixture to help avoid scratching from hangers. If necessary, the fixture can be made with the STP tape instead of the FLEX DC tape.

AUDACY (Wireless Lighting Control)

Today, AUDACY stopped by our office to present their wireless system. There are 4 components to their system:

  • Gateway
  • Luminaire Control
  • Sensor
  • Wall Switch

There are internally mounted controllers much like the dali system

The system can control up to 600w of load and allows for zone control.

While they do have DMX control, they are still working to integrate it into their system more.

Audacy will also be coming out with a remote control relay in November of this year. There is also a tunable white and color tune system coming in the near future.
